Founded in 1995 by Enrique Alvarez Sr., Napa Barrel Repair Shop is built on Enrique’s 30 years’ experience with wine barrel coopering and a family background of woodworkers who made guitars in the world-renowned hub of Paracho, Michoacán.

Enrique began his career as a cooper with Tonnellerie Francaise Nadalie in 1985 under Master Cooper Alain Poisson, eventually working his way to become Master Cooper himself. From there he moved to Seguin Moreau where he was promoted to onsite barrel supervisor under Master Cooper Alain Fouquet.

His experience with Seguin Moreau included two trips to France, where he received specialized training in building barrels for Seguin Moreau. It was here that Enrique realized that his “true passion lay in the art of barrel making.” Since then, Enrique has traveled to Chile, Argentina, Missouri, and many other places in order to gather as much knowledge about barrel making as possible.

In 1995, after his tenure at Seguin Moreau, Enrique began accepting special side projects to repair barrels in an effort to protect winemakers’ investment for the drinkable art they create. By 2005, word had spread about the quality of his barrel repair services and Enrique expanded his business into a full-time barrel repair shop. Besides barrel repair, his team now provides consultation and instruction for in-house winery coopers as well as assembly and installation for oak barrel alternatives.
